Serve our Seniors

A Permanent Voice / Serve our Seniors

Our Serve Our Seniors program was inspired by the overwhelming needs of seniors living in South Phoenix who continue to struggle with substandard housing, increasing rents, transportation challenges, and lack of resources – especially for those who are taking care of grandchildren. A Permanent Voice is committed to ensure that these families are heard and supported.

Serve Our Seniors helps provide underserved seniors in South Phoenix with four key components of support including:

  1. Housing/tenant education and advocacy
  2. Reading/writing literacy
  3. Computer education
  4. Community connection activities

Housing/Tenant Education: Each week, A Permanent Voice visits seniors living in the Grandfamilies Place and Matthew T. Henson Apartments for 1:1 education sessions on tenants’ rights, housing programs and legal services, and other support.

Reading/Writing Literacy: Seniors in Grandfamilies Place and Matthew T. Henson Apartments participating in A Permanent Voice’s literacy classes are guided through a 5-book series curriculum, with three progressive levels of reading/writing mastery. In addition to seniors, their grandchildren can participate as well, as some are faced with mental disabilities. Depending on the frequency of their participation, seniors can complete the literacy component in approximately 90 days.

Computer Education: Serving approximately 25 seniors at a time, A Permanent Voice facilitates computer education classes through a special collaboration with the Zion Institute. Classes teach seniors the basics of computing, including MS Office tools, email, and how to use the internet. Classes are held M/W/F for two-hours each session.

Community Activities: Throughout the year, seniors are able to enjoy group outings and community events, and visit cultural organizations including museums and gardens for personal enrichment. These experiences are immensely valuable and meaningful for their wellbeing, connection with others, and overall quality of life.

Program Goal
Our goal with the Serve Our Seniors program is to provide comprehensive and responsive support for seniors while preserving their ability to be independent and equipped with education to make the right choices for themselves. Our aim is for seniors to feel valued, respected, and appreciated as the matriarchs and patriarchs of our community.
